Handicapped Children

Handicapped Children –
Living in No Bo,

3 children were born into an impoverished family, all suffering from the same severe birth defects, causing the bones of their legs and arms to flatten and become bent and twisted.

Due to the stigma placed on the family, they were believed to be cursed; they were rejected from the community and went into a life of reclusion. To escape shame, the family put the children into a dark room. They were not allowed out. They never left their home again.

Thanks to some friends staying with us, we were led to their house. While talking with the family, we began to hear cries coming from the room in the back of the house. On inquiry we were told that they had children that were born cured, and we were not to worry.

We talked a little more and gained the trust of the family who allowed us to see the children.

As the children left their room their eyes could barely adjust they were so sensitive to light. It had been years since they were allowed out to see the sun. Their parents would normally only permit them to come out under the cover of darkness.

We were able to explain the love God has for their children, and that they didn’t need to hide their children anymore. We discovered they were a Christian family but never returned to church after the children’s birth.

For the first time that day the children were taken out their house and down to the shops for some cookies and a drink.

They had never been to the shops, never taken down the street, never attended a school, and never had any friends.

For the past year they have been enrolled in school and attending a compassion program on the weekend, as well as attending church and other social events as a family. We discovered the eldest girl has a gift for art. During this time we have provided food, medicines, and school supplies for the family.

In the future and with the help of individual supporters we hope to help them with housing that is more suitable for children with disabilities – currently they live in a raised bamboo and leaf house the children are unable to get themselves in and out of without aid.

We also hope to look into medical advances that can be done to help their condition and find useful instruments that may even aid them in walking independently for the first time.
